In October 2024, Indonesian authorities restricted access to 3.7 million websites and digital content units associated with unlicensed gambling operations. The regulatory campaign also targeted the financial networks supporting these platforms.
Financial and Account Oversight
During the same period, officials processed 156,000 user complaints concerning suspicious accounts and identified 85,500 mobile phone numbers linked to suspected fraud. Authorities forwarded information on 38,000 bank accounts connected to the illegal gambling sector to financial regulators, with 32,500 of those accounts already terminated.Meutya Hafid, Minister of Communications and Digital Technology, stated that the government is transitioning from basic website filtering to monitoring user behavior patterns. This approach relies on improved data exchange between state agencies, banking institutions, and financial oversight bodies. The initiative aims to disrupt the financial infrastructure that sustains unauthorized gambling services rather than focusing solely on content removal.
